They also let in ultraviolet rays that fade floors, damage furniture, and reach your skin. UV protection window tinting stops most of that, often without changing how your windows look.
Pacific Window Tinting has protected homes and businesses across Oregon and Southwest Washington since 1998. We’re family-owned, every install is done by our own crew, and we always stand behind our work.
This page explains how UV film works, what it can and can’t do, and how to pick the right option for your space.

Most people assume glass keeps the sun’s harmful rays outside. It only does half the job.
Sunlight carries two kinds of UV that matter here. UVB causes sunburn, and standard window glass blocks most of it. UVA has a longer wavelength. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, UVA passes through windows and clouds all year and reaches deeper into the skin.
That matters in the Pacific Northwest. A gray February day in Portland still sends UVA through your windows. The damage is slow, so it’s easy to miss until it’s done.
What UV does to your home or building
For businesses, the same rays fade merchandise, displays, and the furniture you paid to make the space look sharp.

UV window film is a thin polyester layer applied to the inside of your existing glass. During manufacturing, UV inhibitors are built into the film. Those inhibitors absorb ultraviolet rays before they pass into the room. Quality films block up to 99% of UV. For a deeper look at the science, read how window tinting works.
You don’t need dark windows to block UV
This surprises a lot of people. UV blocking and darkness are two separate things. A film can be nearly clear and still stop almost all UV, because UV isn’t part of the light you see.
That gives you real options:
If you’re worried about a dim room, see does window film make windows dark?
Not every tint is a UV film
Some decorative and privacy films are made for looks, not protection. They still block some UV, but not always at the level you’d expect. We’ll tell you exactly what each film is rated for before you choose.
Our window tinting services meet the highest standards in the industry. We ensure this is achieved in each and every project with our in-house crew of installation experts.
The film technology is the same. What changes is the goal, the glass, and how the job is scheduled.
Homes: Fading floors and furniture, skin exposure, and comfort are the main concerns, in spaces like living rooms, sunrooms, home offices, and skylights. Clear or light films that keep the view are the most common choice. Learn more about Residential UV Protection Films.
Businesses: Fading merchandise and finishes, glare on screens, and employee comfort matter most, in storefronts, offices, medical clinics, and lobbies. The common choice is a film that balances UV, glare, and heat on large glass. Learn more about Commercial UV Protection.
