Window Film Enhances School Security

A school district in Virginia is protecting students by installing protective window film and door coverings in its public schools. Eight schools in Henry County are spending funds from a state security grant to make windows safer during natural disasters and security breaches, according to the Martinsville Bulletin. The Virginia General Assembly established the grant in 2013 in the aftermath of the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, according to the newspaper's website. Security film, such as the Armorcoat safety film that Pacific Window Tinting installs, makes glass hard to break. If the window cracks, the shards adhere to the film rather than falling or flying. When broken glass is contained there’s less chance that someone will be injured. Benefits of Window Tinting for Comfort and Protection

Window film not only makes rooms that are filled with natural sunlight more comfortable, but also protects your furniture and you from harmful UV rays that you might be underestimating. When outdoors in the summertime, most people are aware of the dangers of sun exposure and do what they can to protect themselves. On cloudy days, however— and even more so when we’re indoors— we tend to think we are safe from UV radiation, but this is a dangerous misconception. As it turns out, even in the comfort of our own homes we are not safe from the harmful effects of the sun. Ultraviolet rays can penetrate clouds and glass. This means that when you’re standing at the kitchen sink, looking through the window at your yard, no matter what the weather is like, you’re at risk for UV damage. UVA and UVB Rays Your windows will block UVB rays on their own. These are the intense sun rays that can give you a sunburn, but they’re not nearly as prevalent as UVA rays. UVA rays are present during all daylight hours year round, and can cause premature skin aging, skin cancer and serious eye damage. If you need proof, take a look at the back side of your curtains, the back of a chair, or any furniture that faces a window and notice the fading that has occurred over the years. If your favorite place to sit is in that chair by the window, your skin and eyes could be suffering the same sun damage. The Health Risks of Sun Exposure Eighty-five percent of melanomas and about 90 percent Read more [...] Continue Reading

How Safety Film Gets Tested For Life’s Dangers

Windows are a favorite with vandals and thieves. They let wrongdoers survey your valuables. They also provide easy and fast access to your property. It takes minutes, maybe only seconds, for someone to smash your windows and get inside your business. Once inside, vandals and thieves make quick work, grabbing and going, or smashing and dashing. Portland has seen its share of violent street protests in the past. Recently there's been an uptick of energetic crowds marching through downtown. Many protesters were peaceful. Some were destructive. Others weren’t protestors but opportunists working under the cover of the confusion in the streets. Security film strengthens windows against random vandalism. It can give you greater peace of mind during times of unrest. Window film also protects against burglars breaking in through your building’s most vulnerable points. The Risk of Breaking Glass Windows pose a larger risk than you might think. The pane or two of glass that separates you from the outdoors is no match for a burglar, and it certainly wouldn’t stand up to a bomb blast. What’s worse is that when natural disasters and bombings occur, the majority of resulting personal injuries are actually caused by broken windows and flying shards of glass. Portland, Oregon is known for mild winters. But even in Oregon, our weather causes property damage. Recent winter storms wreaked havoc with the city’s trees. Trees were uprooted and some fell on buildings, crashing Read more [...] Continue Reading

Make Your Rental Property More Appealing

Portland landlords aren’t exactly hard-pressed to find tenants. If you rent homes or apartments in the city, you may feel like prospective tenants are knocking down your door. While there’s no lack of renters in the Rose City, improving the condition and appeal of your properties may help you attract the type of occupant you desire. Renters who are happy with their homes are more likely to stick around, take good care of their unit and pay rent on time. All of that means you’ll be a happier and more prosperous landlord. Even if it’s easy to get renters, the process of finding a new tenant isn’t exactly stress-free. Besides, providing a clean, well-kept home for residents can be a point of pride for you. Make Your Rental Property More Appealing 1. A fair price: Nothing’s more appealing to a renter than a fair price. Research similar properties in the area and set a reasonable rate. Charging too much could lead your tenant to move prematurely. Charging too little doesn’t make business sense for you. 2. Make it energy efficient: Portland is a green city. Chances are your prospective tenants feel a responsibility to conserve energy. They’ll also find the prospect of lower energy bills highly attractive. Seal air leaks and add insulation. Upgrade to water-saving plumbing fixtures and efficient appliances. Install window film on southern-facing windows, skylights or windows that tend to get a lot of sun. 3. Clean and make repairs: Before showing a place, make Read more [...] Continue Reading
